CONSULAR CORPS ASSOCIATION OF TORONTO VISITS YORK REGIONAL POLICE HEADQUARTERS, MEETS YORK POLICE CHIEF AND EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP TEAM

16 July 2024 – Philippine Consul General Angelica Escalona joined the visit of the Consular Corps Association of Toronto to the York Regional Police Headquarters in Aurora, Ontario.
Chief Jim MacSween and the Executive Leadership Team of the York Regional Police gave a briefing on their work and sought the cooperation of the consular corps in ensuring the safety of the community.
York Region is part of the Greater Toronto Area. It consists of nine municipalities: Aurora, King, Richmond Hill, East Gwillimbury, Markham, Vaughan, Georgina, Newmarket and Whitchurch-Stouffville.
York Region’s population growth has been driven by international migration. Based on the 2021 Census of Statistics Canada, there are close to 29,000 Filipinos in the York Region, many of whom live in the cities of Markham and Vaughan. (END)
PHILIPPINES PARTICIPATES IN WINNIPEG’S SISTER CITIES CELEBRATION DURING ITS 150th ANNIVERSARY AS A CITY

07 Jul 2024, Winnipeg – The Philippines, through the Office of the Honorary Consul in Winnipeg, supported by the Philippine Consulate General in Toronto, participated in the Sister Cities Celebration at the Forks in Winnipeg, Manitoba as part of the city’s 150th anniversary celebration. Winnipeg has a sister city agreement with Manila signed in 1979.
The Philippine booth showcased Philippine handicrafts, textiles, paintings, Filipiniana, Barong Tagalog and tourism brochures. The Musica Singers of Manitoba, a vocal ensemble promoting Philippine music, performed a number of Filipino songs during the opening program.
Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham, in his remarks, said that Winnipeg’s present sister city relations is an opportunity to foster collaboration, partnership, economic opportunities, cultural understanding, and build relationships across cultures around the world. He emphasized that the city’s focus is strengthening the relationships it currently has with 11 cities.
Aside from Manila, Winnipeg has sister city relations with 10 other cities, namely Lviv, Ukraine; Beersheba, Israel; Chengdu, China; Jinju, South Korea; Kuopio, Finland; Reykjavik, Iceland; Taichung, Taiwan; Setagaya, Japan; San Nicolás de los Garza, Mexico; and Minneapolis, Minnesota, U.S.A. END

PHILIPPINE CONSULATE GENERAL IN TORONTO HOLDS CONSULAR OUTREACH MISSIONS IN NEEPAWA AND WINNIPEG, MANITOBA
Clients in Neepawa availing of the different services provided during the outreach mission
08 July 2024 – The Philippine Consulate General in Toronto conducted consular outreach missions in the Province of Manitoba, particularly at the United Anglican Church in Neepawa on 06 July 2024 and at the Holiday Inn Express in Winnipeg on 07-08 July 2024.
The outreach missions provided consular services to 792 applicants who availed of services for ePassport, notarization of documents, civil registry submission and dual citizenship application.
The SSS Representative and the Migrant Workers Office (MWO)-Toronto joined the consular outreach missions to provide services to SSS members and Overseas Filipino Workers.
A community forum was conducted after the outreach mission in Neepawa during which the consular services of the Philippine Consulate General, SSS and MWO-Toronto; and concerns of the Filipino community were discussed.
“We appreciate this outreach mission very much. We hope that this will continue,” said one of the applicants in Neepawa. The last outreach mission in Neepawa by the Philippine Consulate General was in 20 August 2021. The Filipino-Canadian Association of Neepawa, the Neepawa and Area Immigrant Settlement Services and the Office of the Honorary Consul in Winnipeg provided support during the consular outreach missions.
Manitoba has the highest proportion of Filipinos on a per capita basis, with Filipinos comprising 6.78% or 90,045 of the provincial population of 1,342,153 according to the 2021 Census of Statistics Canada. Neepawa, in particular, is among the areas with the fastest growing Filipino population in Manitoba with around 2,600 as of the 2021 Census. END

PHILIPPINE CONSULATE GENERAL TORONTO JOINS FILIPINO SALU-SALO IN LEAMINGTON, ONTARIO

30 June 2024 – Philippine Consul General in Toronto Angelica Escalona and Cultural Officer Maricel Samonte joined around 200 kababayans in Leamington, Ontario at a “Filipino Salu-Salo” in celebration of Philippine Independence Day. The event, which was organized by the non-profit Migrant Worker Community Program (MWCP), was held at St. Michael’s Parish. Based on records of the Migrant Workers Office (MWO)-Toronto, there is an increasing number of Filipino workers in Leamington, most of whom are working in the agriculture sector. Consul General Escalona conveyed the readiness of the Philippine Consulate General and MWO-Toronto to assist Filipino workers and informed them that a consular outreach mission for the Windsor-Leamington area will be conducted in September 2024.
