Toronto, 12 April 2022 – The Philippine Consulate General in Toronto is pleased to inform that Dr. Christine N. Ferrer, Director for External Linkages and International Affairs of the Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU) presented on 30 March 2022 to the Consulate General the University’s Certificate of Appreciation “for ensuring the welfare of the two (2) TAU Global Ambassadors (TAU Exchange Students or Filipino students SEED scholars) at Centennial College in Toronto, Canada in 2020.” The Certificate was received by Consul General Orontes V. Castro for the Consulate General during the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Delegation’s visit to Toronto from 30 March to 01 April 2022, with TAU as one of the members of the delegation.

Another Filipino SEED Scholar who studied at Memorial University in Newfoundland was also assisted by Post at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic during the second quarter of 2020. The three students were assisted by the Consulate General until they returned to the Philippines in 2020. The University was originally known as Camiling Boys/Girls High School in 1944, and Tarlac College of Agriculture (TCA) in 1974 until it was officially converted to Tarlac Agricultural University in 2016. 11 April 2022, Toronto - The Philippine Consulate General (PCG) in Toronto conducted a virtual town hall meeting with the with the “Koalisyon Kontra Daya” (KKD). The coalition is composed of different groups such as Migrante, Bayan, Bayan Muna, Malaya, Answering the Cry of the Poor (ANCOP) and Kanayan for Leni.

The Consulate General presented an overview of the election process, including the registration period and with emphasis on the procedures on postal voting. During the open forum, the group aired their concerns on possible election fraud, delays in delivery of the ballots and the need to provide constant information to the public on the elections. Consul General Orontes V. Castro assured the group that the Consulate General is doing everything it can so that the ballots will reach the voters on time and ensure that the policies are implemented in favor of the voter. He also assured the group that their concerns and recommendation will be conveyed to the COMELEC. The group expressed their appreciation for the conduct of the virtual town hall meeting and conveyed that they will pro-actively support the Consulate General in ensuring a transparent and credible election. The virtual town hall meeting was attended by around 21 officers of said groups based from all over Canada. END

April 2022, Toronto – The Philippine Consulate General in Toronto informs that Philippine Honorary Consul in Winnipeg Ronaldo Opina joined the Consular Corps of Winnipeg Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 07 April 2022 held at Winnipeg Squash Racquet Club. Consul (honorary) Opina is currently the Secretary of the Consular Corps of Winnipeg. The AGM was attended by The Honourable Heather Stefanson, Premier of Manitoba. Mr. Brad Robertson, Chief of Protocol of the Province of Manitoba and an honorary member of the Consular Corps, also attended the event. – END

07 April 2022, Toronto - The Philippine Consulate General (PCG) in Toronto successfully conducted the Final Testing and Sealing (FTS) of the Vote Counting Machines (VCM) and other election paraphernalia on 07 April 2022, that will be used in the conduct of the Overseas Voting for the 2022 National Elections.

Two (2) VCMs were tested for the 39,136 registered voters of the Consulate General. A total of 20 SD cards were also tested and sealed. The VCMs and other election materials worked properly and there were no issues encountered during the FTS. Present during the FTS were the local media and watchers representing political groups and candidates. Aside from the watchers, consular clients of the Consulate General also participated in the mock elections using the test ballots.

The official ballots will be sent to the registered voters under the Consulate General. All accomplished ballots received by the Consulate General will be fed to the VCMs every Monday and Thursday, starting 11 April 2022 from 9:00 AM, Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), throughout the election period. Voting will end on 9 May 2022 at 7:00 AM, EDT (9 May, 7:00 PM, Philippine Time). END

09 April 2022, Toronto - The Philippine Consulate General (PCG) in Toronto has started mailing the election packets for registered voters for the 2022 national elections following its receipt from the COMELEC on 08 April 2022.

A total of 800 election packets, containing the official ballot, instructions and a prepaid stamped return envelope, were already mailed to the registered voters. The Consulate General has to check each and every ballot to ensure that the documents are complete and corresponds to the correct precinct number. The Consulate General is also affixing stamps on the return envelopes. Personnel of the Consulate General will work overtime and during the holidays to ensure that the ballots will reach the 39,136 registered voters on time. Consul General Orontes V. Castro has emphasized the importance of voters following the instructions in accomplishing the ballot and to mail or deliver their accomplished ballots at the soonest possible time so that their votes will be counted.

The period for the overseas voting for the 2022 Philippine National Elections is from 10 April to 09 May 2022, during which registered voters can mail or personally deliver to the Consulate General their accomplished ballots. Only accomplished ballots received on or before on 9 May 2022 at 7:00 a.m. (Toronto time), will be counted simultaneous with the counting of ballots in the Philippines. END
