Toronto, 15 April 2020 – The Philippine Consulate General in Toronto is pleased to inform that it assisted today in securing food supplies from the Food Bank in Scarborough the 2 stranded Filipino students from the Centennial College in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada; and a Filipina Temporary Worker (Overseas Filipino Worker/caregiver) in Toronto stricken with cancer. The OFW stopped working in November 2019 due to her sickness and she is being assisted by Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO)-Toronto on her application for the CERB (Canada Emergency Response Benefits) and EI (Emergency Insurance) benefits. She is also being assisted for medical assistance from OWWA.

ATN (Assistance-to-Nationals) Officer Dennis Escobedo assisted one of the students in receiving the food bags from Filipino-Canadian Kirsten Wilson of the Agincourt Community Services Association in Scarborough, Ontario. Filipino-Canadian Jamillah T. Mananghaya-Poernama, RSW and Manager, Newcomers’ Centre and Settlement Counselor of the Association is one of the partner settlement counselors of POLO. Ms. Mananghaya-Poernama informed POLO and the Consulate General on the availability of the food supplies from the Food Bank for indigent and distressed Filipinos in the Toronto area. Ms. Ella Tan, another partner settlement counselor of POLO is also assisting the sick OFW.END

22 March 2020, Toronto - Mr. Walter Lee, Vice-President of Toronto Film School, visited PCG Toronto and met with Consul General Orontes V. Castro. Consul Edwin Gil Mendoza and Trade Office-Toronto Senior Trade Commissioner Maria Roseni M. Alvero were also present in the meeting.
Mr. Lee discussed the study program that the Toronto Film School (TFS) has arranged with the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), with assistance from the Toronto Trade Office, which would allow students from the Philippines to study at the Toronto Film School in Toronto, Ontario starting in October this year. The first group of students will have scholarships supported by TFS, FDCP and some private companies in the Philippines and Canada. Consul General Castro mentioned that there are many young Filipinos with excellent filmmaking skills all around the Philippines and he recommended that TFS and FDCP also consider tapping students in universities from the Visayan and Mindanao regions.
The study program is an outcome of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Toronto Film School and the Film Development Council of the PH signed on 23 September 2019. During the meeting, the Consulate General also notarized the said MoU.-END
