Toronto, 06 March 2020 – The Philippine Consulate General in Toronto is pleased to inform that Consul General Orontes V. Castro called on Ontario Minister of Labor Monte McNaughton in his office at University Avenue, Toronto. Attorney Rachel P. Zozobrado-Nagayo, Philippine Labor Attache in Toronto, also attended the meeting.
Consul General Castro thanked the Minister for the general well treatment of Overseas Filipino Workers in the Province of Ontario. Minister McNaughton replied that when he assumed office as Minister of Labor, he has focused on polices that will promote the health and safety of all workers in the Province of Ontario. He informed that the Training and Skills Development of workers were added to the responsibility of his Ministry.
Minister McNaughton manifested his continued support for the Overseas Filipino Workers and he further recognized their “strong” contribution to Ontario’s labor market. He assured Consul General Castro and Labor Attache Zozobrado-Nagayo that his office will assign a staff who will assist the POLO-Toronto (Philippine Overseas Labor Office) and the Consulate General on issues and concerns affecting the OFWs. He also agreed on the request to have his office conduct an orientation for the personnel of POLO-Toronto and the Consulate General on the provisions of Ontario’s Employment Standards Act and the Employment Protection of Foreign Nationals Act.
27 February 2020 – Philippine Consul General Orontes Castro in Toronto paid a courtesy call on Professor Joseph Wong, Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President, International Student Experience of the University of Toronto on 24 February 2020.
Among the issues discussed during the meeting were the plan to teach Pilipino language at the university’s ASEAN Center with the support of the Filipino Community in Toronto as well as future collaborative projects between Dr. Tammy Sage, Associate Professor, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Univ. of Toronto, and professors of the University of the Philippines, Los Banos.
The meeting was also a follow up of the previous meeting that Consul General Castro, UPLB Chancellor Fernando Sanchez, Vice-Chancellor Rex Demafelis and Vice-Chancellor Portia Lapitan had with University of Toronto officials in November 2019. - END

Toronto, 27 February 2020 – The Philippine Consulate General in Toronto is pleased to inform that Consul General Orontes V. Castro called on Baguio City Mayor Benjamin B. Magalong in his office on 23 January 2020 at City Hall Loop, Baguio City. Baguio City Councilor Leila Sembrano and Ms. Erlinda Insigne, President of Filipino Canadian Association (FCA) of Vaughan, also attended the meeting.
Mayo Magalong updated Consul General Castro on the recently approved redevelopment plan of Baguio City that includes an amusement park, improvement of the City’s waste management, and to enlarge the city’s airport capacity. He emphasized that improving the economic and cultural ties under the sister city twinning agreement between the City of Baguio and the City of Vaughan (Canada) is among his top priorities. Consul General Castro was presented by the Mayor with a symbolic key to the City of Baguio.

27 February 2020, Toronto-The Philippine Department of Tourism Office in New York, joined the recently concluded Outdoor Adventure Show held at the International Centre, Mississauga (a part of the Greater Toronto Area), Ontario from 21-23 February 2020. The team from PDOT-New York was composed of Tourism Attaché Francisco Hilario M. Lardizabal and Senior Tourism Operations Officer Ms. Luz A. Navarro.
Consul General Orontes V. Castro and Deputy Consul General Edna May Grecia-Lazaro visited the Philippine booth on the first day of the show. Philippine Airlines (PAL) Area Manager Ms. Monette Trespeses also joined the Philippine booth to showcase the direct non-stop flights to Manila.

On the sidelines of the show, Consul General Castro and Tourism Attaché Lardizabal discussed the convergence of programs of the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Tourism that aimed to increase the number of tourist arrivals from Canada.END
