29 August 2019, Toronto – The Philippine Consulate General in Toronto took part in the 2019 ANCOP Walk held on Sunday, 18 August 2019 at the David Pecaut Square, King Street West in Downtown Toronto. Acting Head of Post Bernadette Therese C. Fernandez was joined at the event by Consul Edwin Gil Q. Mendoza, Cultural Officer Cecilia D. Santos, Consular Officer Ramoncito A. Mendoza, and Consular Assistant Oliver H. Baranda. The Walk, which started at the David Pecaut Square, took the participants along parts of King Street West, University Avenue, College Street, Bay Street, Wellington Street West, then back to the Square.
ANCOP International Canada, Inc. (ANCOP Canada) is a registered Canadian charity organization dedicated to uplifting the lives of poor people in many underdeveloped countries. ANCOP, which stands for “Answering the Cry of the Poor”, currently funds 2885 scholars in the Philippines and is committed to grow this number as they build their support and resource base.
ANCOP Walk is the organization’s annual signature fundraising event currently held in 20 locations across Canada. Equally important is its capacity to be a venue for ANCOP Canada to tell its story, their vision and mission to transform the lives of the poor through its child education, community development, livelihood training, values formation, and humanitarian relief programs. This year’s ANCOP Walk theme is: “Light to the World. Be an Equalizer in a world gripped by poverty”. This year’s walk had 1,138 registered walkers in Toronto alone and 4,974 in the whole of Canada.
The Philippine Consulate General in Toronto participated at the ANCOP Walk and joined the many people in advancing ANCOP’s goal to restore dignity and hope to the poor by building self-reliant and self-sustaining individuals and communities. END

29 August 2019, Toronto – After the successful official launch of Winter Escapade 7 – It’s More Fun in the Philippines (WE-IMFIT PH 7) by the Philippine Embassy in Ottawa, the Philippine Consulate General in Toronto launched WE7 on 27 August 2019. An estimated 50 people attended the launch at Sentro Rizal Toronto of the Philippine Consulate General.
WE-IMFIT PH was organized by the Philippine Embassy in Ottawa, the Philippine Consulates General in Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary, as well as the Philippine Honorary Consulates General in Canada, in cooperation with the Department of Tourism, for the Filipino-Canadians and tourists from Canada, to experience and revisit the unique richness of the Philippines – its heritage, culture and incomparable beauty and charm.
WE7 will bring snowbirds from Canada and the USA, to the historical places of Manila, Bataan and Clark, and the spectacular white sand beaches of Boracay, from 15 to 22 January 2020.
Consul Edna May Lazaro briefed the audience on the itinerary of the tour. Previous participants of WE shared their exciting and memorable experiences while Philippine Airlines announced their ongoing airfare promotions to attract interested WE7 participants to take the only airline that has direct flights from Canada to Manila. Several launch attendees and interested WE7 participants expressed their anticipation on visiting Boracay island after the clean-up. END.
29 August 2019, Toronto-Ambassador Petronila P. Garcia flew in from Ottawa to attend the 21st Mabuhay Festival Gala Night hosted by the Philippine Independence Day Council (PIDC) at the Toronto Sheraton Centre Hotel on 22 August 2019.

In her remarks, Ambassador Garcia, said that “this year, the Filipino community in Toronto has many reasons to celebrate, foremost of which is the first Canada-wide celebration of Filipino Heritage Month in June.” She also expressed delight in learning that the PIDC is at the forefront of platforms that feature the richness of our cultural heritage.

Aside from Ambassador Garcia, special guests during the Gala Night included, Member of Parliament (MP) Marco Medicino, representing the riding of Eglinton-Lawrence, MP Michael Levitt representing the riding of York Centre and Member for Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Scarborough-Guildwood, Mitzie Hunter.
The Gala was the kick-off to the Mabuhay Philippines Festival, which took place on August 24-25, 2019 at the Nathan Phillips Square. The Mabuhay Festival featured cultural performances, a fashion showcase, and gathered a variety of vendors of Filipino food, products and services at the Square. The Festival also showcased activities for the whole family and a basketball tournament. The highlight of the two-day Festival was the parade held on the second day along parts of major streets in downtown Toronto. END.
